Is Tourmaline or Ceramic Better for Hair?

By Leah Williams •  Updated: 05/21/22

If you want to protect your hair from damage due to styling tools, you should at least consider looking into ceramic and tourmaline technology.

Tourmaline and ceramic material are among the most used material in heat styling tools like hair straighteners, flat irons, and blow dryers.

Now:

If you’re wondering… is tourmaline or ceramic better for hair? Lucky Curl is here to help you choose which one is better.

Ceramic has a got very good reputation when it comes to hair styling tools because of great hair results and less heat damage.

Tourmaline is a good choice too. Tourmaline hair straighteners are excellent for making your hair shinier and smoother.

So, which one do you think is best for your hair then?

What is Ceramic?

Ceramic is a heat and corrosion-resistant material that is used in hair straighteners, flat irons, and other heating tools.

It produces negative ions that distribute heat evenly on your hair’s surface resulting in less heat exposure.

Higher quality ceramic irons are made of full ceramic plates while common ceramic irons are made of aluminum or titanium plates coated with ceramic.

However, bear in mind, that prolonged use causes wear and tear on the ceramic resulting in uneven heat distribution and harsher heat. As a result, your hair becomes frizzy and dry.

What is Tourmaline?

Tourmaline is a crystalline mineral used to coat the plates of a flat iron. This hybrid material produces six times more negative ions than ceramic.

When negative ions interact with the positive ions from the hair, it creates a neutral charge which flattens the hair cuticle resulting in frizz-free and glossy hair.

Tourmaline is often infused in ceramic and titanium plates for straighter and shinier hair results. Tourmaline straighteners are high-performance tools that are gentle on your hair too.

The Verdict (Tourmaline vs Ceramic?)

In my view, both ceramic and tourmaline are great for your hair. Each one of them brings huge advantages to your hair and is safe to use too as long as you follow the proper procedure.

Ceramic is great for shielding your hair from frizz and heat damage. On the other hand, tourmaline gives your hair a silkier and smoother finish.

Both tourmaline and ceramic seal the hair cuticle so it looks more polished after styling. The only advantage is that tourmaline emits more negative ions which are believed to produce better results for your hair.

So, the way to choose between this two is to assess your hair type.

For dry and damaged hair, or if you’re worried about heat damage, ceramic tourmaline flat irons are perfect!

On the other hand, if you want less heat exposure and minimal hair damage, ceramic flat irons are an excellent choice.

Whatever you think is best for your hair, always choose the right hair tools.
