Ceramic vs Titanium Hair Straighteners: Which one is better?

By Leah Williams •  Updated: 05/31/22

Short Summary: If you have got thick and coarse hair, pick the titanium hair straightener. On the other hand, ceramic hair straighteners are suitable for soft, thin, and fine hair that is easy to straighten.

If you’re struggling to choose which one between a ceramic and titanium straightener is good for your hair, this article is for you!

Generally speaking, both straighteners are equally good for your hair. However, you must learn to choose the best fit based on your hair type.

No worries now! Lucky Curl is here to help you answer the question – is ceramic or titanium better for your hair?

Is ceramic or titanium better?

Although ceramic and titanium flat irons are both safe to use on your hair, there could be a small difference between these two which can either make or break your hair.

It takes longer for ceramic flat irons to heat up and works by heating the hair from the inside out, while the titanium flat iron heats the hair from the surface.

It is believed that straightening from the inside is more gentle on the hair shaft. For that reason, ceramic straighteners are best for thin or damaged hair.

In general, telling which type of hair straightener is best depends on your hair type.

Titanium plates heat up in real-time which makes the titanium flat iron or straightener suitable for quick styling thick and coarse hair. On the other hand, the ceramic plates take more time to heat, and will require more effort to straighten your hair, but less damaging though.

On a side note:

The tourmaline-ceramic flat iron is another hair straightener option you should try. When tourmaline is combined with ceramic, it emits negative ions, making your hair smooth, shiny, and frizz-free.

Which hair straightener is the least damaging?

Apart from hair type and styling tool material, there are other factors at play in choosing a hair straightener that’s the least damaging to your hair. Although, almost all heat styling tools are generally damaging to your hair.

I’d say the least damaging hair straightener features varied heat settings. Flat irons with multiple heat settings are suitable for most hair types as it allows you to adjust the temperature accordingly while working on your hair.

If you let me choose between ceramic and titanium iron, my vote goes to titanium flat iron. Titanium flat irons emit more negative ions and uses infrared technology which combats hair damage such as frizz, and dryness. Even better when combined with tourmaline as it counteracts the positive ions which prevent frizzy hair!

So, titanium hair straightener it is!

The Verdict (Ceramic vs Titanium Flat Iron)

When choosing hair straighteners, you must base your decisions on factors like hair type, hair texture, and style preference.

Of course, it is quintessential to prep your hair before styling. Heat protectant products are your saving grace to keep your hair healthy and safe from heat damage.

As much as you want to keep that hair straight and beautiful, you shouldn’t be using the hair straightener too often to avoid ruining your hair. I’d say once or twice a week is good enough!
